2024
The New Zealand Jazz Composition Workshops are a series of live-online classes held throughout the year.
Open to any school-age students throughout New Zealand, the workshops will consist of 10 (90 minute) sessions, as well as hours of additional instructional videos and listening materials, covering all of the tools for young jazz composers. In addition to creating original jazz repertoire for their school jazz combos, the workshops also have the goal of producing recordings of the student compositions in the summer following the workshops. The online instruction is held Monday nights from 5:30 - 7:30.
A NATIONAL PROGRAMME
Hosted and taught by retired New Zealand School of Music/Victoria University of Wellington, Coordinator of Jazz Composition, Dr. David Lisik (davelisik.com) and recent doctoral graduate of the NZSM, Dr. Ryan Brake, these workshops will cover essential jazz theory, notation software, melody writing, harmonic vocabulary, form, orchestration, reharmonization, and information about writing and notation for specific instruments.
The sessions are staggered throughout the year to give students time to put into practice the instruction from the classes. Course materials and assignments will be given to the students through an online Facebook community exclusive to the students enrolled in the workshops.
The fees for the Jazz Composition Workshops are $200.00 per student for the 2024 sessions.

**Refunds for cancellations will be given until the second class, after which no refunds will be possible due to commitments for staffing/faculty for the workshops.**
